Tarry 2021-22 – 8 Days of Tarrying Devotional
By Marni Hawkins

Hello my friends its so great to be back sharing the Word, fellowship and united prayer with you again. It’s been a while, hasn’t it? I just am excited to see what the Lord is going to do in each one of us and for what He has on my heart to share with you. When the assignment was given to me, I was not all Yeah! Woohoo, Ok Holy Spirit let’s go! kind of thing at first. You may be asking why? I am a planner and I do not like doing things under pressure. However, I will say since moving to Ohio there has been a lot of quite the opposite of not a lot of advance notice and having to decide quickly with not much time to spare. Normally, previous to an assignment is much waiting, pruning, to prepare myself for His next task. The Holy Spirit reminded me of something. He is perpetually making us ready for the next thing because the waiting time is decreasing. However, many times, we may not be aware of this. The reason is life circumstances of this world that surround us, get in the way.

There have been many personal heartbreaking challenges for my family, over these last few months, that in all honesty was quite overwhelming. I kept saying to God stop the rollercoaster I’m ready to get off. I almost forgot to enjoy the ride with Him through everything. At this point I am still processing, some grief and loss of my father, and being estranged from some of our other close family. God has been so good, faithful and loving. He does the impossible just when I need it most, He is doing the same for all of you.

As I was spending quality alone time with my heavenly Daddy, he kept emphasizing this one phrase, “Tarrying is Beginning.” My first inclination was to count how many letters are in the word tarrying. Of course, there are 8, no coincidence. It is the number of new beginnings. For example, Christ’s birth celebration was yesterday that’s a new life starting. Another is why we are tarrying for the next 8 days, the outpouring of his Spirit birthing His church. When God is teaching me something, he gives an acrostic to me as a reminder. This is His teaching to you using the word TARRYING. I will give you what letters stands for each day. The other part that’s amazing is simultaneously he was presenting me with a mental picture of kindling and what it represents to us. Also, kindling

also has 8 letters. The Holy Spirit does this for me as confirmation, I’m hearing Him just fine. I have 3 definitions to share really quick with you:

1. KINDLING-aneasilycombustiblematerialforstartingafire.
2. COMBUSTIBLE-abletocatchfireandburneasily.
3. TARRYING-tointentionallywaitforanexpectedevent.Itisverbnota

noun, meaning you must choose to do it.

Flag Scripture references for this tarrying are: Luke 24:49 which reads, “And, behold, I send the promise of my Father upon you; but tarry ye in the city of Jerusalem, until ye be endued with power from on high. Acts 1:8 says, “But ye shall receive power, after the Holy Ghost is come upon you; and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.” Acts 1:14, which says, “They all continued with one accord in prayer and supplication, with the women, and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brethren.” I exhort you to be open to how and why of the apostles became the kindling to start the church. Without kindling there is no fire even of it is lighter fluid, it has to have to right attributes for flame to catch.

December 26,2021 READ:( Matthew 25:1-13) John 4:21-24 FOCUS: Worship in Spirit and Truth

Good morning family, I pray you had a great day yesterday celebrating our Savior’s birth. The T in our acrostic today represents TRIM the WICK. Remember in the introduction how I was talking about what will make something burn? It has to be combustible. Picture for a moment, a lantern, what two things does it need to work? A wick and some oil. As I was a researching, I ran across this. A wick will work best when the gunk is trimmed off of it and it is cut to a point in the very center. Then it be saturated with oil. If there is a lot of carbon build up it will smoke and not burn brightly. This then provides a slow steady flame which produces cleanest and clearest burn. The example from the Word derives from the parable of the 10 virgins. Five of them were wise and 5 were foolish. Let’s compare what made them so:

5 Wise
Took oil in separate vessels
In addition to what they had (vs. 4) Trimmed their lamps
Ready for the bridegroom (vs. 7)

5 Foolish did not

did not
He came and the door had been shut

(vs. 10)

This parable illustrates watchfulness and being ready for His coming. It seems worship is the way we can, like the 5 wise virgins prepare this watchfulness. Also since this is the beginning of tarrying prayer day at Evangel, it is a great time to worship, pray, and seek His face. Read John 4:23 says, True worshippers shall worship him in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeks such to worship him. First it comes from a place of knowing the truth of knowing who we attribute worth ship to, in reverence and holy fear. Second, the Spirit worshipping him as a person, on a personal level. In others words. Let’s go back to our discussion of the wick and the oil. The two must go hand in hand. For there is not one without the other. The wick is the truth of revealed the word of God (Jesus) and the oil is our personal relationship with the Holy Spirit. The order the virgins

sought was the balance between the two. When we receive the truth without the Spirit our religious side can take over and never have the relationship, he is so passionate about having with us. We resort to duties of do’s and don’ts, not want and want to’s. If we are overly Spirit focused without the truth of the Word to back it up. I believe the Holiness and reverence He deserves is lost and there can be a tendency to be too familiar with the Holy Spirit and we lose sight of that pureness. The result is a mixture of the holy and the unholy. A dumbed down version of Him is not where He belongs.

___________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________

Prayer: Father forgive us when we have become like the foolish virgins being unprepared in worship to remain close to You. In this way our lives become too calculated like work and progress to redundancy and a heart that is not worshipful. Forgive us when we have become too familiar with You O God and have not upheld You in fear and Holiness. We crave as the wick for You Holy Spirit to saturation us with the oil so we can produce a clear clean flame burning brightly always anticipating Your return. In Jesus name Amen.

December 27, 2021 READ: Luke 24:46-53; Acts 1:12-14; Hebrews 10-24-25 FOCUS: Assembling in Unity (Power)

I love it when the Holy Spirit shows me something new like the wick and the oil like He did yesterday don’t you? Let’s investigate what He has in store for us today shall we? The A in our acrostic stands for ASSEMBLE THE KINDLING. I’m pretty sure you all have built a fire some time in your life, right? Every fire starts first with kindling as the base from which everything will burn. Think about that for a moment, in the church what would the kindling be? We are of course. Visualize with me for a sec, the 120 assembled in the Upper room together for 7 days straight. The united anticipation, focus, praise, prayer, worship as the culminating power as one mind, heart and spirit, faith and love. This same power is what we are tarrying for in our remaining 7 days of Tarry 21. Luke 24:49 in the Amplified version, reads “Listen carefully: I am sending the Promise of my Father [the Holy Spirit] upon you, but remain in the city [of Jerusalem] until you are clothed [fully equipped] with power from on high.

Two things I want to emphasize here. One, endued in Greek is “enduo” or in English dynamo. It means not to just be clothed alone but with power of whom we wear will confirm what Jesus preached in signs and wonders. Isn’t that awesome? God is awesome! Two, the fullness of His power derives from the Greek word “dunamis” which is inherent power (it exists in us as permanent, essential or characteristic attribute) the reproduces the works of Christ. We are to continue expecting God to pour Himself out on us, I believe like never before, until He does! How do we preserve this unity then? Come together in all areas, heart, soul, and mind or physically, spiritually, and emotionally. I can use coal as an example to give you a visual. Physically like, coal is indestructible it still remains as carbon even after it exudes its energy. In a spiritual sense, coal can reproduce itself as other kinds of coal, under certain conditions for an intended specific use. Like our emotions under intense heat or “red heat” for coal it can melt all other metals. Is it conducive to make His outcome possible? When God feels we do also this is one of the parts that tends to be left out in prayer. I’m encouraging you to put it back in. God gave us emotions for a reason, right? Ask Him to feel what He feels this for the next week. It will change Your prayer life.

___________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________

My question for you is this and it is my prayer for you today. Holy Spirit where do I need to improve when I am under intense heat of Your presence to still produce Your light in intensity, indestructibility, reproducibility and conductivity. Help me so You can reproduce the works of Christ in me and assemblance of others for Your intended specific use. In Jesus name, Amen.

December 28, 2021 READ: Luke 12:48; Romans 3:19-23, 5:9 FOCUS: Responsibility (Mutual Position)

WHOA! That was an ouch hallelujah moment for me yesterday. Hope it ministered to you all as much as it did me. Day three already, time is flying by. 8 days is not a long span of time. Remember the Upper room span was 7 days. I encourage you to spend as much time with the Lord and letting the Holy Spirit minister to you. The acrostic letter now is RESPONSIBILITY. Responsibility is something God has entrusted us humans both individually and corporately with being answerable to Him first and then to others. Romans 3:19 says the whole world is accountable to God and we all sin. Peter Parker in Spider-man once said, “With great power comes great responsibility.” After we assemble or put the kindling in place in our scenario, the next step is to keep it well maintained. Keeping it dry, not allowing any trash in it that wont burn and leave the big logs for later.

How do we do that? By caring for what God alone has entrusted to us. In Genesis 1:28 we are commanded by Him to be fruitful and multiply, fill the earth, and subdue it and have dominion over every living thing. So, as He reveals more of Himself to us, the more responsibility He gives the more accountable we become. Luke 12:48-50 (NAS) reads, “From everyone who has been given much, much will be required; and to whom they entrusted much, of him they will ask all the more. I have come to cast fire upon the earth; and how I wish it was already kindled?” The Lord expects us to use what we have been blessed with to glorify Him and benefit others wisely and unconditionally. The Holy Spirit shared this with me, maintain the flame don’t pass the blame. Adam and Eve blamed others when they sinned right?

Am I the only one that has done this on more than one occasion? Sometimes, especially during special times of prayer and fasting, we corporately need to take a position of responsibility for others sins who cannot do it on their own. We must trust in Christ’s finished work of righteousness on the cross and stand on their behalf to repent of their sin, decree, bind, and loose, etc. I call it mutual responsibility. This means we share it. If we want to sustain God’s outpouring there is no I, me, He, she, we, or them. We are one in Spirit with Him as one whole with no disconnection. Romans 12:5 says, “So we being many, are

one body in Christ, and every one member of another.” The act of one affects the whole. The pulpit commentary refers to this as ‘body politic’ or ‘organic unity.’ For our church to carry this weighty heavy glory does not solely rely on one-man i.e., Pastor David or any one leader, it will take all of us to mutually hold it for its too much for just one person.

___________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________

PRAYER: Help us Lord to all be carriers of Your move, by being mutually responsible as Your body the church to share in our part of the whole because without accountability we could end up like Uzzah (1 Samuel 6:6-7) who transported the Ark of Your glory man’s way and you struck him dead. Forgive us Lord and guide us to be mindful that Holy things are to be treated with the manner in which You only have prescribed. In Jesus name, Amen.

December 29, 2021 READ: Philippians 4:8-9; Colossians 3 FOCUS: Retrospect Response (Holy Pause)

I cannot believe we are halfway on our journey together already. You are doing such a divine thing by honoring the vision of your Pastor. Let’s continue talking about the acrostic. It is our second R and stands for RETROSPECT RESPONSE. Retrospect is a reverent looking back on something or someone that happened in the past. It would be best to start off by piggy backing on what we discussed yesterday, mutual responsibility. God not only gives us the ability to be accountable but also to respond in kind and not react so we may not quench what the Holy Spirit is doing in, to and through us. Our response comes from the process I call active remembering or a Holy pause. Simply choosing to make the time to pausing in His presence and remember who God is and our identity in His Son before we react too quickly. A reaction takes no real thought and can be tense or aggressive. Whereas a proper response is well thought put calm and non- threatening. James 1:19 says, “Everyone must be quick to hear, slow to speak and slow to anger.” Have you ever heard the song, “When I think about the Lord?” Here are lyrics for you who have not heard it:

When I think about the Lord. How He saved me, how He raised me. How He filled me with the Holy Ghost. How He healed me, to the uttermost.

When I think about the Lord. How He picked me up and turned me around. How He set my feet on solid ground.

It makes me want to shout Hallelujah thank you Jesus. Lord You’re worthy, of all the glory, all the honor and all the praise.

The song is telling us to think about Him and pause. What would Jesus do say type of thing. I am going to list just a few scriptures to encourage you to remember Him and freeze for just a moment.

(Psalms 63:6) When I remember thee on my bed, I meditate on You in the night watches.

(Psalms 40:5) Many, O’ Lord my God, are the wonders works which You have done; and Your thoughts towards us; there is none to compare with You. If I would declare and speak of them, they would be too numerous to count.

(Psalms 139:17) How precious also are Your thoughts to me, O’ God! How vast is the sum of them?

(Isaiah 26:3) You will keep the mind that is dependent on You in perfect peace, for it is trusting in You. (HCSB version)

(Colossians 3:1) Therefore if you have been raised with Christ, keep seeking the things that are above, where the Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. (NASB version)

(Philippians 4:8) Finally brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report: if there be any virtue, an if there be any praise. THINK ON THESE THINGS.

Pause in response to all you have experienced or want to experience with The Holy Spirit like they did in the Upper Room. Remembering is your altar or memorial to the Lord which has a sole purpose. HIM ALONE! It is like letting kindling sit for a bit to get seasoned or putting soup on a low simmer to absorb the flavor. It’s the transition time before going to another level spiritually in our maturity in Him. When you season food, it gives it more flavor. If a fruit or vegetable is in season when it is consumed it is sooo good. When not in season it will not be ready or it will have rotted.

Last thought, in the Psalms there is a Hebrew word used “Selah.” In a nutshell, it means to stop and think about that. Ask the Holy Spirit to help you discern what season you are about to enter and which one needs to be left behind.

Prayer: Father God forgive us when we have not kept ourselves in the place of surrender and pausing at our altar to remember You. When we have not offered up our everything including the gifts You have graciously bestowed to us at this time to discern what season we are supposed to be in or what intensity level in You want us. Help us find value in the Selah moments and think about all You. Then our identity In Christ will remain our focus and from our heart the right Retrospect Response will result in us as an overflow to the world. In Jesus name, Amen

Dec 30, 2021 READ: 1 Thessalonians 5:18; Romans 12:12; Colossians 4:2 FOCUS: Pursuant Purposeful Prayer

I would like to start off by saying what a blessing it is to be writing again. Since we walked about pausing in His presence yesterday, I have taken a break from writing to refocus. It is my greatest passion. I just have not done it very much yet. In those times in my life The Holy Spirit always refreshes, restores and renews me where I need it most. Are you guys enjoying this Holy Spirit adventure yet? Thanks for your loving support and encouragement. It means so much to me. The Y in our acrostic stands for YIELD. This yielding is our Pursuit of Him in purposeful prayer. Pursue means to continually go after or stay on track of something or someone until it is attained. I know on this tarrying we should always be praying and you would be right. Some of you might say to it should have been on Day 1. Of course, all of what we are doing to reconnect with the Holy Spirt is so very important, especially prayer. I’ll ask you this: are you actually communicating with Him? Or is it maybe slightly or more one-sided. As John Bevere says, “prayer is not a monologue; it’s a dialogue between two persons.”

One of the Greek words for yield “paristemi” has one meaning relating to communication, to bring into one’s fellowship or intimacy, to be present. In English, we say it is to give the right if way. This has a much deeper connotation which is to see the need, God by His Spirit reveals to you, met. We do not meet the need unless we interpret His intent and not our own. As we are pursuing God in prayer for the remaining 3 days, our kindling is already, maintained, arranged, seasoned, and need a fixated heat source of being prayerful. 1 Thessalonians 5:18 instructs us to pray without ceasing. I would like to propose to not just throw words at God our Father. Let them all have meaning in that secret place. describes it as, “a mental attitude to be prayerful, continual personal fellowship and consciousness of being in His presence throughout each day.”

Pastor David said this about Prayer for Tarry 21, “we are to be Praying with Purpose for the harvest of Souls by pleading humbly and seeking God’s favor.”

Yverse commentary presents it as when you are thankful pray, in trouble pray, lacking wisdom pray, at stated and non-stated times pray. Always be ready and willing no matter where you are or who you are with to PRAY.

 ___________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________

PRAYER: Daddy, we come to You acknowledging who You are is a great Father. Help us to see ourselves as You see us. There is no holes or gaps in yielding in Your Presence, and being intentional in our purpose for it. We desire to continually pray in pursuit of Your Harvest of souls being brought in from all walks of life. Let the outcast, lame, dead, deaf, blind, naked, prodigal, addicted, abandoned, rejected, sorrowful and the shamed come. Draw them by Your Spirit O’ God. Thank You for Jesus sitting at Your right hand to intercede for us in Heaven. Holy Spirit reveal to us what You Need from us in prayer and we repent when we have missed the target. Shine Your light where You desire in every intentional moment, we spend with You. We love You so much. Thank You for always being there. In Jesus name, Amen.

December 31, 2021 Read Jeremiah 20:7-9; James 3:5

My friend today is a pivotal date on the Gregorian calendar. It is the last chance we can say the date ends in 2021 for tomorrow is a new year. The I in our acrostic is IGNITE. Let us recap on the kindling scenario for a minute, shall we? Yesterday I spoke briefly on focused, purposeful, intentional prayer is like a concentrated heat source which is ready to ignite into a fire! The Holy Spirit is the ignition point between the wood and the lighting instrument, when it bursts into flame. Ignite means to start burning or to cause something to burn or explode. What would that look like in each one of us? James 3:5 “it only takes a spark to catch a forest on fire.” Jeremiah 20:9 (NAS) says, “I will not make mention of him nor speak anymore of his name, but [ his word] then in my heart it becomes like a burning fire shut up in my bones: I am weary of holding it in. I cannot endure it. “

Jeremiah speaks of passion which cannot stay contained. As I was researching Jeremiah 20:9, I found out it was part of a 10-fold complaint he had against God because God called him and no one was listening. Neither did the Lord give him advanced warning or heads up about this third persecution. This one even included bodily harm 40 lashes minus one. Jeremiah’s crime was telling them what they did not want to hear. Did Jeremiah spend his life prophesying for nothing? I think not because after he determined to stop speaking, he could not hold back what was happening inside. FIRE!!! I don’t want to discourage you here but exhort you to watch your words carefully guys. Let them be spirit and life. Be like Samuel and don’t let them fall to the ground. There is a line for Laura Story’s song Blessings. It reads, “What if my greatest disappointment of my aching in this life is the revealing of a greater thing this world cannot satisfy.” I’ll put it to you this way, there would be an intense pain and could only be quenched by being released. It is the place where the 120 were at Pentecost on Day 7, the Holy Spirit would not be held at Bay any longer.

___________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________

My prayer for you dear friend is that He will not Let go and you will not let go until the bursting takes place. We have one more day than they did. we cry for You to fill us over and over until it is no longer status quo. No longer comfortable or ordinary. We are at the point of yearning to be set ablaze with Your power from on High. As we close the chapter of 2021 let us feel the imploding of Your fire shut up in our bones and prepare us for the explosion Holy Spirit. Forgive us of any old ways we look for Your presence and have missed the new. For we embrace the new and behold it in our hearts like Mary did with her Son Jesus and treasure it always. Reveal to us anew. Open our eyes to see You clearly, un-deafen our ears to hear Your voice uncompromised and give us receptive, responsive hearts of flesh to understand Your promptings. In Jesus name, Amen.

January 1, 2021 READ: 1 John 3:1-2
FOCUS: Encounter the mystery

Happy New Year Evangel family! God’s blessings upon you and your kin this coming year 2022. May there be as much joy, refreshing and renewed power in your lives! This is day seven, when the results of your tarrying begin to materialize you as a power conduit of the Holy Spirit in your encounter with others. Like when the 3,000 got saved after Pentecost. In this case for our acrostic the spelling might look incorrect but it works ENCOUNTER. For all you Trekkies, Star Trek fans out there, it means going to where no man has gone before. At least in your case, experiences with God you have never had. Amen?

According to’s blog, an encounter in not a standard run in with God. “It is that type of knowledge which meets/knows God but does not cognitively exhaust Him as known. To have that encounter implies that there is more to know about Him, more to see and more to experience. It’s the type of knowledge which confronts and embrace a mystery as a mystery.” Our knowledge of God can never be exhausted. He would cease to be God, for that mystery would take an eternity to be solved. Many times, man and God encounters there is a period of waiting until the suddenly happen with both of us. I know this may seem contradictory in what I’m saying to you. I believe when the Holy Spirit breathes His power on a person part of that mystery is no longer a mystery.

Our part of being the kindling lies in restoking the fire of that mystery and explaining it, if necessary, to others what they may be experiencing that’s new or do not understand. 1 John 3:2 reads, “Beloved, how are we the Sons of God, and it doth not appear what we shall be: but we know that, when we shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is.” Dakes annotated reference bible lists in the study notes 1 John 2:3 which says, “And hereby we do know that we know him if we keep his commandments.”

21 Reasons We Know That We Know Him this is all in 1 John

1. In personal fellowship(1:3-7)
2. Fullness of joy in heart(1:4)
3. By keeping his commandments(2:3)

4. Walking as he walked(2:6)
5. Love of the brethren(2:9-11,3:10-19,23;4:7-21;5:1)

6. Overcoming the world and Satan(2:13-14;5:4,18)
7. Hatred of the world(2:15-17)
8. Being one with Christians(2:19)
9. Holy Spirit anointing(2:20-27)
10. Knowing the truth that sets free (2:21; John 8:32-36)

11. Acknowledging God and Christ (2:22-25)
12. Doing righteousness (2:29; 3:7-10; 5:1-4, 18)
13. Purifying ourselves (3:3)
14. Being born again (2:29; 3:9; 5:1-18)
15. Cleansing from sin (1:7-9; 3:5-10)
16. Freedom from condemnation (3:20-24)
17. The indwelling spirit (3:24; 4:4, 13)
18. Faith (2:23; 5:1, 10)
19. Confessing Christ (4:14-15)
20. Receiving Christ (5:10 -13; John 1:12)
21. Answered prayer (3:21-22; 5:14-15)

___________________________________________________________________  ___________________________________________________________________

Exhortation: In embracing the mystery friends, we enter the mystery of all the Holy Spirit. If you knew all about God, we would not need Him to teach us to remember all Jesus is and did while he walked this earth. But our tarrying draws Him to do greater works through us. John 4:12 states, “Verily, verily I say to you he that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also: and greater works then these shall he do because I go unto the Father.

January 2, 2022 READ: 2 Peter 1:3-4

Yeah, we made it guys! It’s our last day. So proud of you for following through. There is a scene from the Three Musketeers when they are on a ship and someone wants to come aboard. Porthos says, “Permission granted.” The last letter in the acrostic is G for GRANTED. While Paul and Barnabas are in Iconium, in Acts 14:3 they spoke boldly in the Lord, which gave testimony unto the word of His grace and granted signs and wonders to be done by their hands. The present tense of it is grant, which basically means to give title to or given permission without compensation in return or a God completed act presenting His gifts and promises in our present. The result is instant possession for a believer as permanent. The gift of the Holy Spirit is poured out in us, to us, and through us to be granted to the world. As we are the kindling this is like our passing the torch, to others to grab a stick light it and take the fire with them. 2 Peter 1:3-4 (NAS) version says, “For His divine power has granted to us everything pertaining to life and godliness, through the true knowledge of Him who called us by His own glory and excellence. Through these He has granted to us His precious and magnificent promises so they by them you may become partakers of the divine nature; having escaped the corruption that is in the world.” The Holy Spirit gives / grants and we partake (to take a part) and share it in common with others. What did the 120 do after Pentecost? What did the disciples do after Jesus told them to follow Him? We all have someone we share in common; The Holy Spirit. He is always available to be our anointing for whatever our tarrying may have been for.

Exhortation: While they waited, for the promise of the Holy Ghost. He was then and is now our empowerment to witness to the world. With all the Spirit of God is for us, to us, in us, and most of all through us. But only if He is not granted permission to work within our hearts and lives, it may not be granted or entrusted to us with anything He treasures and Holy.

Love you all see you all next time.
